Type Locality and Naming

Sichuan Basin (northern). Type section at Lianghekou (Lianhuakou), 5 km north of Jianmenguan, Jiange County, Sichuan Province. Named by Hou T F, Wang H H, 1939, Bull. Geol. Surv. Szechuan. Lowest formation in the Chengqiangyan Gr.

Synonym: Lianhuakou Conglomerate


Lithology and Thickness

Brick-red sandy mudstone. Synonym implies conglomerate at base?

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Overlies the Suining Fm of latest Jurassic.

Upper contact

Overlain by the Jainmenguan Fm (lower-middle formation in the Chengqiangyan Gr in northern Sichuan Basin).

Regional extent

Northern Sichuan Basin. Equivalent to the Penglaichen Fm in the middle part of the basin.

Age 

Schematic strat column in previous "red Chinese Lexicon" implied that the Lianhuakou Fm was late Kimmeridgian. Diying Huang (2019; Jurassic integrative stratigraphy and timescale of China. Science China: Earth Sciences, v. 62) re-assigns this Lianhuakou Fm as late Tithonian-early Berriasian.
